A 74-year-old man who is recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound has been charged with attempted murder for shooting his wife in an Athens dentist office.

Carl Clark shot Sheila Mobley multiple times Monday morning at McRae Family Dental on Baxter Street and then fled town in his SUV.

When authorities stopped the vehicle in Butts County, Clark shot himself in an apparent attempt to commit suicide.

His injuries were not life threatening and police expect him to be released from the hospital soon, at which time he will be brought to Athens to face charges of criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery.
