Man’s remains found in Athens sewage pipe

By Joe Johnson

At about 11;15 a.m. Friday, Athens-Clarke County police responded to a report of a deceased person who was located in a drainage pipe in the 2500 block of West Broad Street.

The discovery was made by contractors who were on site to assess the area for repairs when they located a human body in a drainage pipe, according to Lt. Shaun Barnett, ACCPD's public information officer.

"The body had a level of decomposition that indicated that it was there for some time," he said. "There were no obvious indications of foul play at the scene."

The body was sent for an autopsy at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's State Crime Lab.

"At this time the identity of the deceased is unknown," Barnett said. "Based on some clothing items the deceased is believed to be a male, but due to the level of decomposition, the race and sex of the deceased has not yet been confirmed."
