Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz has called a press conference for Wednesday morning to discuss community safety initiatives and Athens-Clarke County’s status related to immigration.
City Hall issued the announcement Tuesday afternoon, with the city having been thrust onto the national stage from a student being killed on the University of Georgia campus.
Authorities allege that 22-year-old Laken Hope Riley was murdered by Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela.
The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Athens-Clarke County Police Department Headquarters, 3035 Lexington Road.

Cue the ignorant people that think immigration status had ANYTHING to do with this tragedy. I would much rather have an immigrant neighbor than most of you as a neighbor. The hate you spew towards your fellow humans makes me think this country, and especially this state, will never be free of racism.Perpetuating more hate and violence towards brown people won’t bring Laken back and won’t stop the next misogynist, violent man from harming a woman.
The next cop that shoots someone in cold blood, will you still say ‘it’s not all cops.’ Or is this only for brown people?
Shit happens when you are a “sanctuary city” and “opens their arms to all immigrants regardless of legal status”. Which is basically a sanctuary city even though a sanctuary city in Georgia is illegal.
Girtz will somehow associate this situation with lack of affordable housing.
I'm glad it's Kelly trying to explain this and not me. But he's good at this stuff. And I'm not. I'm inhibited by tending to tell the truth.
