New mural at the Morton Theatre

The Leisure Services Department announces the completion of “The Stage of Memory,” a new mural by artist Alex Maksiov in the lobby of the historic Morton Theatre.

The mural transforms the lobby wall into an immersive scene inspired by the Morton Theatre at the height of its cultural significance, featuring notable performers from the theatre’s history and honoring its founder, Monroe Bowers “Pink” Morton. A secondary wall celebrates the theatre’s early days as a movie house.

Maksiov’s design was selected by a community panel from more than 150 applications submitted through a nationwide call for artists. The project was funded by the ACCGov Public Art Program, with generous support from the Athens Downtown Development Authority and the Georgia Power Foundation.
