Pedestrian killed in Athens

A woman was killed Thursday night when she was struck by a car while crossing a street in east Athens, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

The driver of the car fled from the scene, police said .

Police said they responded to the incident at about 9:34 p.m. in the area of Cedar Shoals Drive and Crows Nest Court for a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

The initial investigation indicated that 34-year-old Carly Johnson of Lawrenceville was walking in the northbound lane of Cedar Shoals Drive when she was struck from behind by a 2015 Chevrolet Impala that was traveling northbound on that road, according to police.

Johnson died at the scene, police said.

This is the eighth fatal motor vehicle crash of 2022 in Athens-Clarke County.
