Update: One teen killed, another injured in east Athens shootout

An Athens teen was killed and another injured in a shootout late Friday afternoon in an eastside Athens shopping district, according to police.

Officers responded to the reported shooting at about 4:45 p.m. in an area between Citgo at 145 Gaines School Road and the Goodwill store in the Willowood strip mall on Lexington Road,

"Upon arrival, officers located two individuals that had been shot," said Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Lt. Shaun Barnett in a Friday night statement. "Preliminary investigation indicates that these two individuals shot each other. One of the individuals, a 19-year-old male from Athens died as a result of his injuries. The other subject that was shot, an 18-year-old male, also from Athens was transported by EMS to a local hospital. He is expected to survive."

The investigation is ongoing, and police asked for anyone with information regarding the incident to call 706-613-3330.

Athens-Clarke County Police Chief Jerry Saulters on Saturday said Nelson was fatally shot and he shot and injured an 18-year-old Athens male in what appeared to be a gang-related matter.


Nelson was said to be one of several gang members who were when arrested in December during an operation by the Northeast Georgia Regional Drug Task Force and agents with the FBI Safe Streets Gang Task Force.”


Looks like the right person got whacked!! No loss to society! No loss at all. Probably saved lives.

Wow. You must be a deeply miserable person. What could joy mean to the kind of person who talks about someone’s death like that? Hopefully at least outwardly miserable enough that no one made the mistake of having a family with you, because it would be a shame if you had to experience the loss of a loved one and see someone be so bold and hateful about it.
