JEFFERSON POLICE DEPARTMENT TERMINATES OFFICER FOLLOWING GBI ARREST
Jefferson, Ga. — March 6, 2026 — The Jefferson Police Department has terminated the employment of Sgt. Jose Marrero, effective immediately, following his arrest by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) on March 6, 2026.
Marrero, a nine-year veteran of the department, was arrested on charges of Violation of Oath, Criminal Trespass, Terroristic Threats, and Party to a Crime-Criminal Damage to Property.
The investigation was initiated on February 23, 2026, after Chief Steven Bannister requested that the GBI investigate an incident that occurred on February 22, 2026.
"The allegations against this officer are serious and do not represent the core values of this department. We requested that the GBI conduct a thorough, impartial investigation. We are committed to accountability and maintaining the trust of the community we serve," said Chief Steven Bannister.
Marrero was booked into the Jackson County Jail.
The Jefferson Police Department is fully cooperating with the GBI. As this is an active and ongoing criminal investigation, any further questions should be directed to the GBI or the Jackson County District Attorney's Office.
