
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department announced that its officers will conduct vehicle checkpoints on March 19th.
In accordance with department policy, the checkpoints are being publicized beforehand.
“In 2023, we saw an 11% increase in Driving Under the Influence arrests,” said Sergeant Vincent Schill, the Traffic Unit supervisor who organizes the checkpoints.
.“These checkpoints allow the department to remove unsafe drivers from our streets and also give us a chance to educate thepublic."
Specific locations of the checkpoints will not be announced. During contact with drivers, officers will hand out an educational fliers with local statistics and address why ACCPD conducts vehicle checkpoints
