Science fact of the day: Succulents are defined in an unusual way

Unlike many other plant groups, which are named for their common evolution (such as grasses, roses, palms, orchids, or ferns), succulents are defined by what they do.

In fact, any plant that stores water in thick, fleshy tissues is considered a succulent. This means that succulents can be from any scientific plant family.
