Teen critically injured in Barrow Co. Publix shooting

By Joe Johnson

A teenager was critically injured Friday night when he was shot in the parking lot of the Publix supermarket in Bethlehem.

According to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith, a 16- year-old boy was shot multiple times, allegedly by 18-year-old Edwin Rodriguez Peña, who was taken into custody and is being held at the Barrow County Detention Center.

He is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, the sheriff said.

"Both the victim and suspect knew each other from work but we don't know what led up to the incident to cause the suspect to shoot the victim," Smith said.

According to the sheriff, the victim was transported to the Athens Piedmont Medical Center, and later transferred to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
