Two UGA students robbed by gunmen in separate incidents on same day

Two University of Georgia students were robbed at gunpoint this week, authorities said.

The first robbery reportedly happened just after noon Thursday when the 21-year-old victim said he was in the 300 block of South Pope Street near Waddell Street, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

The gunman reportedly stole a backpack, laptop computer, cellphone and a wallet with a total value of more than $3,000.

Police said the victim described the suspect as a slim black male who was in his 20’s, about six feet, one inch tall and wore dark clothing.

Officers unsuccessfully searched the area for the suspect, police said.

The robbery occurred in an area not far from UGA’s Main Campus where many students live, and fraternity houses are located.

Police released this video of two people, one of whom resembled the suspect, who were walking in the area at the time of the robbery.

They were searching for other area residents who might have additional video footage for the investigation.

The second robbery occurred about 12 hours later, at around 11:51 p.m. in the lower parking lot of Russell Hall at 515 Baxter Street, according to UGA police

The location was within a half-mile of the first hold-up.

According to a UGA Special Security update, the victim was approached by two men who asked to use his phone and then immediately ordered him at gunpoint to get on the ground.

And stole a phone and keys with a total value on $314, police said.

The suspects reportedly were described as slender black males who were about six feet tall and in their early- to mid-20s.According to the UGA security notice, one of the suspects was described as having a dark complexion, short hair and short facial hair, wearing a dark blue or black long-sleeved T-shirt with a white design on the front, dark jeans with tears on the front and white shoes.

The second suspect was described as having a medium complexion, clean shaven and wearing a dark gray hoodie style zip-up jacket, dark pants with a white stripe down the sides, grey beanie hat and white shoes.

In the South Pope Street investigation, Athens-Clarke County police announced that Crime Stoppers was offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the suspect’s arrest.
