A University of Georgia football player was arrested early Tuesday in connection with an incident with a former girlfriend who is pregnant.

Colbie Maleek Young, a 22- year-old wide receiver for the UGA Bulldogs, was charged with the misdemeanor offenses of battery and assault on an unborn child.

A report by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department has the following information:

Just before 1 a.m., officers responded to Horizon At Tallassee apartments to meet with the 20-year-old victim, who described an incident that occurred an hour earlier at Young’s residence at Paragon Luxury Apartments on U.S. Highway 29 North.

The woman said she went there to discuss the status of her relationship with Young, but things became heated when she found that Young was on the phone with another woman.

According to the victim, Young grabbed her by the arm, pulled her from the bedroom then went back inside and locked the door.

As she was gathering belongings to leave, she said, Young grabbed her from behind, picked her up and squeezed very hard.

“She said that she felt like Mr. Young was trying to harm her” unborn child.

A bruise and discoloration were observed on the woman’s torso, and “photos were taken of her injuries.”

A National EMS crew responded to access the victim’s injuries. She declined an offer to be transported by ambulance to the hospital, but was driven there by a police officer.

Police then went to Young’s apartment to interview him. He told officers that the victim had come to discuss their relationship that recently had ended.

The football player said that when things escalated to a heated argument, he escorted her to the door.

“Mr. Young denied ever grabbing (the victim) tonight,” an officer wrote in the report. “I asked him how she received the injuries and he told me it wasn’t from him. While I was interviewing Mr. Young he was very closed and gave very short closed answers.”

Young was arrested “based on the totality of the circumstances along with physical evidence of injury to (the victim).”

He was released from custody Tuesday afternoon, upon posting bonds totaling $2,500.

Young is a senior who transferred from the University of Miami. He is a wide receiver for the Bulldogs, and is the seventh team member to be arrested this year.

Most of the other arrests have been driving-related, though receiver Rodarius Thomas was dismissed from the team prior to the beginning of this season for being arrested on family violence charges.
