Where is Stetson Bennett? Latest updates on former Georgia star amid leave of absence from Rams

By Crussy Froyd/The Sporting News

Former Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett IV drew a large amount of attention over the course of his college career as he led the Bulldogs to consecutive national titles the last two seasons.

The Rams selected Bennett in the 2023 NFL Draft, but he has yet to see action as a rookie. In fact, he hasn't been seen at all recently after Los Angeles removed him from the active roster just three days after being named the backup QB behind another former Georgia star, Matthew Stafford.

Here's a look at what we do know about Bennett's situation.

Where is Stetson Bennett?

Stetson Bennett is currently listed on the Rams' reserve/non-football illness list. There has been a lot of speculation and questions surrounding why Bennett is not presently with the team, though no concrete reporting has emerged.

Rams head coach Sean McVay has not set a timetable on Bennett's return. Based on the way things look right now, it would be surprising to see Bennett rejoin the team in 2023, as McVay indicated on Oct. 30 when he said Bennett was doing well, but unlikely to play this season.

It is still not out of the picture, though for him to play a notable role in 2024. McVay indicated in late September that he had been staying in touch with Bennett.

"He's doing really well, which I was really encouraged to be able to hear," the coach said then. "Got a chance to hear his voice and he sounds really good, and that was really cool to hear."

Earlier in that month when McVay was asked about Bennett's situation, he kept his response short.

"There are certain things that I think are a little bit bigger and more important, and out of respect for the particulars and the specifics, [I] want to be able to keep it in-house."

Bennett did make a rare public appearance at the Georgia-Ole Miss game in Athens on Nov. 11, getting a roaring ovation from the home crowd during a trophy presentation.

Stetson Bennett NFL Draft

Bennett was all over the projections ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, ultimately selected by the Los Angeles Rams at 128th overall in the fourth round.

There were some split opinions among analysts on what Bennett brought to the table, with some knocking him for his age (25 at the time) and height disadvantage (5-11).

That clearly didn't affect him much in his time at Georgia as he garnered a lot more positive attention in his final year with the Bulldogs with vastly improved decision-making that paved the way for a 4,000-plus passing yards season.

Bennett walked into that year with a strong sense of self-awareness in what he needed to get better at with more responsibility leaned on him.

“My footwork in the pocket is my big focus,” Bennett told us ahead of his final season. “My consistency in my drops. And then just the timing with the wideouts on timing routes is another thing I’ve really put a lot of work into. ...

"I’ve got a lot more freedom this year than I did last year with changing calls, I’ve always done mic points and run to run and stuff it opens up more, pass checks and a bunch of different things."

Stetson Bennett college stats

Bennett has been one of college football's greatest success stories over the years, going from a walk-on quarterback to replacing former potential Heisman Trophy candidate J.T. Daniels.

Bennett successfully led Georgia to back-to-back national championship victories, marking the beginning of what seems to be the dawn of a new dynasty era for the Bulldogs.
