Woman reports being raped in her Athens apartment

Police are investigating a report by a 22-year-old Athens woman that she was raped in her apartment late Friday night.

The suspect was identified as an 18-year-old Athens resident who the victim described as a friend of a friend who drove her home from Duke’s and Dottie’s line dance and country bar on East Broad Street.

In addition to the rape, police are investigating the crimes of aggravated assault, aggravated sodomy and felony theft.

Police said they were notified about the incident by staff at the Family Protection Center on Lexington Road.

The suspect doesn’t have a history of criminal prosecutions locally, but it has been reported that he was arrested there months ago in Barrow County for DUI and possession of cocaine.
