Woman's body found in North Oconee River

By Joe Johnson

A woman’s body was found Sunday afternoon in the North Oconee River.

According to Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson, the body was spotted at about 2:30 p.m. from his apartment by a resident of Waterford Condominiums on Wilkerson Street.

Personnel with the ACC Fire and Emergency Services Department used a boat to recover the body, which Wilson said was about 15 feet from the riverbank.

The body appeared to have been in the water for several weeks, according to Wilson, who described the remains as badly decomposed and belonging to a possibly middle-aged white woman.

The body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Lab, where attempts to positively identify the woman and determine the cause of death will be made.
