Athens-Clarke County Animal Services has extended a moratorium on accepting owner-surrendered dogs and dog adoptions through the end of the month, as the animal shelter on Buddy Christian Way copes with an outbreak of parvovirus.
After announcing Tlaxcala temporary moratorium last week, the county on Monday said it was extending it through the remainder of the month because another dog tested positive for the disease.
Parvovirus is a highly contagious disease that primarily affects dogs.
Officials said that cats can continue to be adopted during the moratorium.
They hope to resume regular operations on Nov. 3.
