In response to an Internal Revenue Service notification of noncompliance, the Athens-Clarke County Regional Library System Board of Trustees voted Thursday to pay all penalties to resolve all unpaid taxes and penalties. Earlier this year the board was notified by the IRS that tax filing procedures had not been followed properly and that the library system had accrued a balance.
"The Library System is repaying about $90,000," said Darcy Calia, the library system's public information officer.
ARLS Director Valerie Bell issued the following statement:
“The ARLS staff have identified and corrected the procedural missteps that allowed this oversight to occur and are grateful to our Board of Trustees for taking proactive steps to address the financial implications. We are committed to ensuring that all business office procedures are compliant with local, state and federal requirements. Our staff remains focused on our mission to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that empowers individuals and communities by providing resources that encourage discovery, imagination, and life-long learning.”
The Athens Regional Library System consists of 11 branch locations located in five Northeast Georgia counties. Library operations and services at all branches remain unaffected.
