Athens couple indicted for leaving children in car filled with gasoline fumes

By Joe Johnson

An Athens couple has been indicted on cruelty charges for leaving their children unattended in a vehicle that was filled with gasoline fumes three years ago.

A Clarke County grand jury charged Nathan Tyler Bishop, 32, and Brittany Nicole Cannon, 32, each with four counts of second-degree cruelty to children, according to the indictment filed Aug. 27 in Superior Court.

The indictment accuses them of leaving their four juvenile children alone in the vehicle for at least 30 minutes in the parking lot of County Inn & Suites on Old Epps Bridge Road in October 2021.

The inside of the vehicle was cold and it had unsealed containers of gasoline. An arrest warrant indicates that “the odor of gasoline was strong when the doors were finally opened,” and one child told officers at the scene she had been scared.

Bishop and Cannon were released from custody on bonds, with the condition that they comply with a Department of Family and Children Services safety plan.

They are scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment on Sept. 17.
