Athens homeless man may have froze to death

By Joe Johnson

A 22-year-old man apparently froze to deathTuesday night at homeless encampment off Old Hull Road.

Dequavious Ragsdale reportedly showed up at the camp a few days earlier needing somewhere to stay and one of the residents offered to share his tent,

The resident called 911 at 7:25 am Wednesday to report that his guest wasn’t breathing and hadn’t moved for some time.

Emergency responders confirmed that Ragsdale was deceased and made a preliminary determination that drugs and sub-freezing weather were contributing factors.

“It appears he may have used fentanyl and then succumbed to the environmental conditions,” a police officer stated in a report,

An autopsy is to be performed at the state medical examiner’s office.
