Athens man killed after losing control of motorcycle

By Joe Johnson

An Athens man reportedly was killed Wednesday night after he lost control of his motorcycle and slid into oncoming traffic.

According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, 50-year-old Kashif Abbas of Victory Estates Drive was driving a 1982 Honda south on Whit Davis Road at about 7:12 p.m., passing other vehicles and losing control as he rounded a curve just prior to Pioneer Drive.

The motorcycle dropped and slid into northbound traffic and collided with an oncoming Toyota Tundra pickup truck driven by a 43-year-old Firewood Court man, police said.

Abbas was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Police said they got preliminary information about the incident from witnesses, but an investigation continued, and they asked for anyone with information regarding the crash to contact Senior Police Officer James Trotter at 762-400-7326 or james.trotter@accgov.com.

ACCPD noted that the incident was the 12th fatal vehicle crash in Athens-Clarke County in 2023.
