Athens man killed by truck while crossing West Broad Street

By Joe Johnson

An Athens man was killed Wednesday night when he was struck by a pickup truck while crossing West Broad Street.

According to Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson, 59-year-old Glenn Stevenson of Chateau Terrace was crossing the road in front of Hilltop Grille at about 8:45 when he was struck by an eastbound pickup.

Wilson said the man died at the scene, making him the 22nd traffic fatality in the county this year.

The incident was investigated by the Georgia State Patrol, which determined that the driver was not at fault.

“No charges are pending against the driver,” said Sgt. First Class Tim Meyer, commanding officer of GSP Post 32 in Athens.

“The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk and wearing dark clothes,” he said, “and the pickup struck him in the inside lane closest to the two-way center turn lane."
