A man was transported to the hospital because of a fire in his home on Woodbridge Circle over the weekend.

Firefighters responded at around 11 a.m. Saturday after a man called 911 to report that his neighbor needed help getting his adult son out of their smoke-filled residence, according to Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services.

Firefighters arrived to remove the son from the basement and extinguish a fire that was near a wood stove, ACCFES said.

Fire crews deployed a second hose line to extinguish fire that had extended through ductwork to the upper floor of the residence, according to ACCFES,

National EMS reportedly transported the son to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fire Chief Nate Moss said the fire illustrated the need for people to have plans for quickly getting out of their homes in the event of emergencies.
