Athens police identify officer who shot man who threatened him with machete

By Joe Johnson

Athens-Clarke County on Wednesday identified Officer Roger William as the cop who last weekend shot a suspect who reportedly tried to attack Williams with a machete.

According to police, Williams was one of the officers who responded Saturday afternoon to University Garden Apartments on Baxter Drive shortly after 5 p.m. to investigate a report of domestic violence.

Soon after arriving at the complex, Williams encountered an armed 28-year-old North Carolina resident identified as Salvador Salazar, who was said to have been involved in the domestic violence incident.

”The subject ignored commands from the officer to drop the machete and attacked one of the officers. The officer fired at the subject, striking him,” the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

Williams, who was not injured, shot Salazar in the torso.

The suspect on Wednesday remained in serious condition at the hospital.

The GBI subsequently obtained a warrant that charges Salazar with aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Williams, who was hired in March 2018, was placed on administrative leave with pay while his actions are investigated internally and the overall incident is probed by the GBl.
