Athens-Clarke County police on Wednesday continued attempts to identify the person who shot and killed a pregnant Athens woman Monday night as she walked in her eastside apartment while holding her 3-year-old son’s hand.

Auriel Callaway, 24, who was four or five months pregnant, was treated at the scene and then transported to the hospital where both she and her unborn child were pronounced dead, according to Athens-Clarke County Public Information Officer Geof Gilland.

At the time she was shot on Carriage Court within the Clarke Gardens public housing complex, Callaway was walking with her toddler son, who Gilland said was not injured.

Some media outlets reported Wednesday that Callaway was an innocent bystander who was struck by a stray bullet that came from a group of people who were fighting at the complex.

Gilland would not confirm those reports.

“Detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Callaway’s death,” the police spokesman said.

In the hours after the shooting, investigators executed search warrants at multiple apartments at Clarke Gardens and took into custody “multiple people for questioning.

They have all since been released, Gilland said.

Police urged anyone with information about this case to contact detectives Scott Black or Paul Johnson at (706) 613-3330.
