Athens woman killed in two-vehicle collision

A loxal woman reportedly was killed Wednesday in a two-vehicle collision on a busy Athens roadway during the morning commute.

According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, officiers responded at about 6:45 a.m. the area of Lexington Road and Shadybrook Drive for a crash involving two vehicles.

Police said the Initial investigation indicated that a 2014 Nissan Altima was attempting to make a U-turn on Lexington Road when it was struck by a 2007 Ford Econoline van that was eastbound on Lexington Road.

The driver of the Nissan, Rosa Burke, 78, of Athens was transported by EMS to a local hospital where she died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. according to police.

The front passenger of the Nissan and the driver of the van were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation was ongoing, and police asked for anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Senior Police Officer Joey Lewis at 762-400-7169, or joey.lewis@accgov.com.

This is the 10th fatal motor vehicle crash of 2022 in Athens-Clarke County.
