A 49-year-old woman was hospitalized with severe burns Monday morning after she was set on fire by her boyfriend at their home in east Athens.
Getrude Willis was getting ready to take Anthony Jones to work when he “set her on fire for an unknown reason,” according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
Jones, 46, was last seen running from the apartment complex towards Georgetown Drive and a police search of the area prompted lockdowns at Cedar Shoals and Gaines School Road high schools.
When officers arrived at the scene they found Willis unclothed in a parking lot and with “burns all over her body and head.”
They learned that the victim had run to a neighboring apartment where a resident put out the fire with an extinguisher,
Jones was last seen wearing a plaid shirt and jean shorts and police asked for anyone who sees him or knows his whereabouts to call 911.
