Coming to the Morton Theatre

The Morton Theatre Corporation presents Synchronicity Theatre’s acclaimed musical adaptation of Catching the Moon: The Story of a Young Girl’s Baseball Dream on Friday, Sept. 25, with performances at 10 a.m. and noon at the historic Morton Theatre in downtown Athens.

Based on the beloved children’s book by Crystal Hubbard and adapted for the stage by Tyrone L. Robinson, Catching the Moon tells the remarkable true story of Marcenia Lyle, the determined young girl who grew up to become Toni Stone — the first woman to play regularly on a men’s professional baseball team in a major professional league. In 1953, Stone broke barriers when she joined the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League.

Set in the 1930s, the spirited family musical follows Marcenia as she refuses to let expectations define her future. Despite being told that baseball is “a boys’ game,” she pursues her dream with talent, determination, and resilience, ultimately proving she belongs on the field.

Featuring an uplifting, blues-inspired score,Catching the Moon celebrates perseverance, courage, and the power of believing in yourself. The production offers an engaging and educational experience for students, families and audiences of all ages while highlighting an important chapter in American sports and civil rights history.

The performance is especially well-suited for school groups, connecting with themes of history, character education, perseverance, inclusion, and following one’s dreams.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 per student for groups of 10 or more. Groups are encouraged to reserve seats early by contacting the Morton Theatre box office weekdays from noon to 4 p.m. at 706-613-3771.
