An elderly motorist was killed in Athens Saturday morning in a two-vehicle collision, Athens-Clarke County police said.
The crash occurred at about 10:45 a.m. when the 81-year-old victim drove his 1983 Buick Regal into the path of a Jeep when pulling out of Harve Mathis Road to cross U.S. Highway 29 North police said.
The driver died at the scene and his passenger, a 77-year-old woman who had to be extricated from the vehicle, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The driver of the Jeep was a 19-year-old male who sustained a minor injury; his passenger, was a 19-year-old female suffered a broken hand, police said.
Police spokesman Geof Gilland stated in an email that “ACCPD will release further information about the incident when the incident report has cleared our Records Unit.”
