GBI: Dead man was in van parked for several days at Oconee Co. Walmart

By Joe Johnson

A man who was found deceased last week in a van at Walmart in Oconee County was located after someone notified authorities that the vehicle had been parked there for several days, according to Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director of Public Affairs Nelly Miles.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office notified the GBI at about 11 a.m. Thursday and requested the state agency to conduct an investigation, Miles said.

“The investigation shows that the van had been there for several days and at this time, no foul play is suspected,” she said.

“Based on everything known at this time, the deceased man drove the van there,” Miles said.” Once the next of kin notification has been confirmed, we can release an identity. The investigation is active and ongoing.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office explained in a Saturday Facebook post that the GBI was asked to investigate because sheriff's personnel were focusing on the March 19 murder of 23-year-old Elijah Wood.

The Watkinsville resident was fatally shot while working as the night clerk at RaceTrac on U.S. Highway 441 at Hog Mountain Road.
