An Athens middle school student was recently disciplined after he used a school computer to search for information on how to make a bomb.
The 14-year-old W.R. Coile Middle School student was flagged by the GoGuardian software company’s Beacon program, which uses algorithms to monitor what students are doing on school-issued devices and flag any activities that signal a potential risk of self-harm or threats to others.
During a conference between police, a school administrator, the student and his mother, the boy denied misusing his computer to search for the alarming information.
He tried blaming classmates, but when pressed to be truthful, the boy said he “thought it was funny” searching for bomb-making information.
The mother told police and school officials that her son did not have access to weapons and she gave consent to have a search of the boy’s bedroom, which found nothing of concern.
The student was placed into in-school detention and school district police were notified.
