An Athens man was arrested Sunday for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend and stabbing her lover during a home invasion nearly two months ago, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.

According to the report, 30-year-old Gary David Brewer of Old Epps Bridge Road entered his former girlfriend’s trailer at the Sleepy Hollow Mobile Home Park on Commerce Road at about 6 a.m. Aug. 15, while the woman was having sex with her 27-year-old lover.

She and Brewer had children together, and she broke off her relationship with Brewer in June, the report noted.

The woman told police that Brewer picked her up, “slammed her on her head,” then choked her until she lost consciousness, and when she came to she saw Brewer and the other man fighting and as she tried to intervene Brewer stabbed the other man as with an insulation knife, according to the report.

The victim, fearing for his life, fled the residence and police were unable to locate him, according to the report.

Brewer had already left the scene in a car, and when an officer reached him by phone, the suspect denied being in the area of Sleepy Hollow and refused to meet with the officer, according to the report.

Police subsequently obtained warrants charging Brewer with aggravated assault and, under the state Family Violence Act, another count of aggravated assault, as well as first-degree home invasion and first-degree burglary.

Brewer was booked into the county jail at 9:13 p.m. Sunday, and a Magistrate Court judge denied him bond at a hearing Monday morning.
