Athens woman shot in Oconee Street area

By Joe Johnson

Athens-Clarke County police said they were investigating the shooting of a woman early Wednesday morning east of downtown.

Officers responded to the area of Oconee Street on a report of a woman being shot.

The caller told police the victim was in or near a tan Nissan Maxima, but when officers arrived, they were unable to locate the victim or vehicle, in the area or at any of the local hospitals, police said.

More than an hour after the 911 call, a 26-year-old Athens woman was dropped off at St. Mary’s Hospital, suffering from a serious, but non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her torso, police said.

The victim was evasive with officers regarding the circumstances and location of how she received the injury, according to police.

The tan Nissan Maxima was located at a local apartment complex, but the driver fled upon arrival of the officers. The vehicle contained blood inside the passenger compartment, and the car was towed for processing by forensics detectives.

Investigators did not believe that the shooting was a random act, police said, and the case remained under investigation late Thursday afternoon.
