Authorities were investigating a murder-attempted suicide that occurred Thursday at a home in Jefferson.
According to a Saturday post on the Jackson County Sheriff’s Facebook page, deputies were dispatched to 28 Preakness Trail in Jefferson after someone called 911 that a male in the home had shot her mother and then shot himself.
“Deputies arrived on the scene and made entry to the residence, locating the subjects, the post states “Jackson County EMS units then transported both subjects to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville," the social media post stated.
“The female identified as Stephanie Wade Ellis (40) of Jefferson, GA later succumbed to her injuries. The male subject is currently in the hospital with critical injuries, according to the post. “The Jackson County Criminal Investigations Division and The Georgia Bureau of Investigations Crime Scene Unit were called and responded to investigate the shooting and crime scene.”
The name of the male shooter, who reportedly was Ellis’ husband, was not released by the sheriff’s office, which said in its post that the investigation was still active.
"I'm not sure what prompted (the shooting) that night, but we have had calls before to that residence for domestic violence issues," Jackson County Sheriff Janice Mangum told radio station WDUN.
According to her Facebook page, Ellis was a registered nurse employed by Northeast Georgia Health System.
