Pedestrian killed on Atlanta Highway in Athens

By Joe Johnson

A Stephens County man was killed early Friday when he was struck by a truck while crossing Atlanta Highway at Mall Access Road, Athens-Clarke County police said.

Sidney James Batchelor, 69, of Toccoa, was staying at the Perimeter Inn, located near that intersection, and he was returning to the motel after having gone to the RaceTrac gas station and convenience store across the street, according to police.

Police said officers were dispatched to the scene at 3:35 a.m., after Batchelor was hit in the roadway by a box truck that was traveling east on Atlanta Highway.

The truck’s driver remained on the scene, to which personnel from the Georgia Department of Public Safety’s Motor Carrier Division responded in order to conduct an inspection of the commercial truck.

No charges have been filed pending the outcome of the accident investigation.

Police noted that the incident was the fifth fatal collision in Athens this year.
