A Winder-Barrow High School student was killed Sunday night when she was struck by a suspected drunk driver, according to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.
Obianuju Osuegbu, 17, was riding her bicycle at the intersection of state Highway 11 and Pendergrass Road, not far from the teen's neighborhood, Smith said.
A teacher who knew Osuegbu said the teen was struck by a car as she road home from her job at Ingles on Broad Street.
She was struck by a 2008 Ford Taurus driven by 41-year-old Winder resident Chrissy D. Rawlins, according to Sgt. 1st Class Tim Meyer, commanding officer of Georgia State Patrol Post 32 in Athens.
The incident on Monday continued to be investigated by GSP's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
Without mentioning Osuegbu's name or the cause of her death, the high school notified the WBHS community of the student's passing in a Monday afternoon email that stated:
"It is with great sadness to report that one of our WBHS students passed away on Sunday, August 23rd. Please keep their family in your thoughts and prayers. We will have counselors available during the school day if students are having a difficult time and need to talk. Included is a Google Meet link shared for students to join at the times listed on Aug 25th."
