Woman reports she was gang-raped in Athens

By Joe Johnson

A woman reported last weekend that she had been gang-raped near an eastside homeless camp, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.

The report was initially made Sunday night by a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital who told police the 38-year-old woman had arrived at the Baxter Street hospital with a complaint of an injury to her ankle that she sustained in a fall down a hill at the camp behind Piggly Wiggly on North Avenue, according to police.

The woman reportedly met two men at the bottom of the hill, and they took her into the woods where she encountered four more men, and all six men raped her.

The woman told an officer who responded to the hospital that her ordeal began between 12:30 and 3 a.m. on Aug. 5 and that she was assaulted over the course of the next 48 hours or so, according to the police report.

The woman was taken from the hospital to the Family Protection Center, where she met with a detective and a representative from The Cottage sexual assault and children’s advocacy center, the report noted.

The woman described her attackers as older black men, most of whom had gray beards, according to the report..
