An Athens-Clarke County grand jury this week indicted an Athens man for allegedly shooting his former wife five years after their marriage was annulled.

John Michael Patterson, 46, of Huntington Road was charged with aggravated assault and multiple counts of aggravated battery, according to the indictment that was filed Tuesday in Clarke County Superior Court. The police incident report was not immediately available, but court records indicate that Patterson’s marriage was annulled in Oglethorpe County in August 2014.

The indictment accuses Patterson of shooting the victim at an unnamed location in Athens on May 6 of this year, and Clarke County Sheriff’s records indicate he was arrested that same day,

The aggravated battery charges stem from the alleged assault that seriously disfiguring the victim’s left foot and “rendering it useless,” according to the indictment.

On May 29, Western Judicial Circuit Judge H. Patrick Haggard denied Patterson’s motion for bond, indicating he believed the defendant “poses a significant risk to a person” and the community, court records show.
