Man beaten and robbed in downtown Athens

By Joe Johnson

A 61-year-old man reportedly was beaten and robbed in downtown Athens early Thursday morning.

The Reese Street resident told police that he went for a walk at about 5 a.m. and when he got to the area of Heery’s Too on East Clayton Street he was attacked from behind by three males who beat him and stole $50.

The victim was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of cuts on his face and head.

He described one of the suspects as using a baton-like weapon to beat him, according to police.

When reviewing downtown surveillance camera footage, police said they saw the suspects, and one of them was carrying a cane.

The investigation was continuing, according to police.

That's very reason I would not walk downtown at 5:00 a.m.
