By Joe Johnson

A Putnam County man was killed Tuesday night in a two-car collision in Oconee County.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a trooper from GSP Post 32 in Athens was dispatched at 7:04 p.m. to the crash on U.S. Highway 441, just south of Bishop.

According to the investigation, a white 1998 Ford Ranger driven by 64-year-old Carnell Porter of Madison was traveling north, and a silver 2015 Honda CR-V driven by 72-year-old Sidney Luke of Elberton was traveling south.

The Ranger veered over the center line and the Honda struck the Ranger's passenger side, according to GSP.

“Both vehicles sustained fire damage from the crash and came to an uncontrolled rest off of the roadway,” GSP said.

The Ranger’s passenger, 32-year-old Jeffrie Rivers of Eatontown was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the patrol.

Porter, Luke, and his passenger, 69-year-old Kathy Luke, also of Elberton, were transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Charges are pending completion of an investigation by GSP Troop B’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
