Investigation finds no negligence in death at assisted living facility in Athens

By Joe Johnson

The recent death of an elderly resident of an Athens assisted living facility was not due to negligence, a police investigation has concluded,

The investigation was conducted after police received allegations that an 86-year-old resident of Manor Lake died last Sunday because of neglect by one of the employees.

That employee allegedly had numerous disciplinary problems in the three short weeks of her employment, including sleeping on the job and falling to make required checks on the resident the day she died.

The police department assigned the case to a detective who conducted interviews at Manor Lake this week.

“Interviews have been completed, and no charges will be pursued,” said Lt. Katie Jenkins, public information officer for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

“Any internal matters will be handled by Manor Lake personnel,” Jenkins said.
