Allen Wasif, 21, of Norcross was arrested early in the morning of September 21st after he recklessly sped through Athens in a Chevy Corvette, reaching speeds of over 100 mph and nearly striking pedestrians, according to police.

The arrest report states that an officer was running radar on West Broad Street at King Avenue at about 12:15 a.m. when he saw the Corvette drive past and was “continuously speeding up and slowing down.”

When the officer tried to pull the car over, Wasif reportedly hit the gas and reached speeds of “well over” 100 mph as he fled.

The officer said he stopped the pursuit because of the public danger it was posing.

He noted in his report that when the pursuit had reached Milledge Avenue the Corvette “rose into the air and nearly struck a pedestrian who was crossing the street.”

The officer’s report further states that Wasif had driven past other pedestrians “on the wrong side of the roadway West Broad Street and entered downtown Athens where there were hundreds of pedestrians and vehicles.”

After having given up on the chase the officer learned that the Corvette was parked behind the University of Georgia’s physics building where Wasif was attempting to hide with a female passenger.

Wasif was then arrested on charges of speeding, reckless driving, felony fleeing police to evade arrest, possession of an open container of alcohol in a a vehicle, and several moving violations that include failing obey a traffic control device.

He was later released upon posting a $10,000 surety bond.
