Pair indicted for rioting in Athens jail

By Joe Johnson

A Clarke County grand jury this week indicted two prisoners for rioting in the county jail in Athens.

The defendants are charged in connection with an incident that happened at a jail on June 18th.

Jeremiah Davis, 28, and Andrew Elasri, b

G22, were each charged with unlawful tumultuous acts in a penal institution , according to the indictment filed Tuesday in Superior Court.

They “did unlawfully commit an act in a tumultuous manner by causing a tablet battery to catch fire,” the indictment states.

Arrest warrants further stated that the battery was used to ignite rolled up paper. “This resulted in smoke filling the unit’s exercise yard and several detention officers having to rush to the scene.”

The grand jurors declined to indict on arson charges.
