Pedestrian killed by hit-and run driver in Athens

By Joe Johnson

A 66-year-old homeless man reportedly was killed Wednesday afternoon as he was walking on the sidewalk along North Avenue.

According to county Coroner Sonny Wilson, a vehicle jumped the sidewalk near Strickland Avenue at about 4:15 p.m. and killed the man on impact before leaving the scene.

Wilson did not release the victim's name because he had had yet to notify his next of kin as of Friday night.

Information about the incident was not immediately available from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department,

The pedestrian became the 22nd traffic death this year in the county, a record high.
