Police investigate bomb threat in area of Georgia Theatre

A one-block radius around Georgia Theatreon North Lumpkim Street was closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic Thursday afternoon due to a bomb threat.

"ACCPD responded to a possible bomb threat in the area of the Georgia Theatre just prior to 2:30 p.m.," said the police department's acting Public Information Officer, Sgt. John Q. Williams.

"We had no information on the presence of any devices," he said. "We take any threats seriously and through our partnership with UGA Police, agencies responded jointly and cleared the area."

The one-block radius around Georgia Theatre includes portions of North Lumpkin, Washington, North Hull and Clayton streets, and College Avenue.

Williams said that "there was no mention of evacuations“ of buildings in the area.

The county government issued a 3:53 p.m. advisory that the area had been reopened.

  The area has been opened to normal traffic, and officers have left the area.
