UGA police: Rape reported in downtown Athens

The University of Georgia Police Department has issued the following community notification:
February 28, 2026
3:55 a.m.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is currently investigating a Rape incident that occurred at approximately 1:25 a.m. in the area of 520 North Thomas Street. The victim reported that while in the area of 510 North Thomas Street she was approached by an unknown male who offered to walk her to her residence. The victim reported that she accepted the offer and during the walk, the male pushed her to the ground behind the parking lot for the establishment located at 520 North Thomas Street and sexually assaulted her.
The University of Georgia Police Department urges all individuals, whether in this general area or elsewhere, to be extremely cautious of their surroundings. All persons are encouraged to develop specific safety strategies that relate to their circumstances. For further information, please refer to the UGA Police Department website. Please use caution and notify law enforcement immediately if you observe suspicious activity.
