Science fact of the day: Porcupines are born without quills

Writer's picture: Classic City NewsClassic City News

Baby porcupines, called porcupettes, are born without the species' characteristic sharp or barbed quills.

Instead, porcupettes have soft and bendable quills that gradually harden in the first few days after they’re born. Baby porcupines stay with their mothers for a few months until they are ready to live on their own.
