Two Athens residents reportedly were injured Friday afternoon when they were struck by a car while bicycling on Old Elberton Road.

Police said that 56-year-old Matthew Heitman and Nicola Mastrogiovanni, 44, were cycling single-file around the fog line of the roadway near the entrance of Coile Middle School at about 1:18 p.m. when they were struck from behind by a southbound 2024 Ford Escape.

According to police, the collision occurred when the car's driver, 73-year-old Kenneth Sedlacek of Athens, answered the phone using the hands-free feature of his vehicle.

The bicyclists were treated at the scene by witnesses and county firefighters and transported to the hospital.

Classic City News could not immediately learn the condition of the victims Monday morning.

The incident continued to be investigated, and police asked for anyone with information about it to contact Lt. Greg Slaney at Greg.Slaney@accgov.com or 762-400-7082.
