Two people die from injuries suffered in separate Athens traffic accidents

By Johnson

Two people have died from injuries they sustained in separate motor vehicle crashes that occurred earlier this month in Athens.

Fredrico Purnell, 36, of Burkland Drive suffered fatal injuries the afternoon of May 4 when the Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving on Danielsville Road struck a raised median at the intersection of Nowhere Road and he was ejected from the vehicle, according to Athens-Clarke County police, who said that they were notified on Wednesday that Purnell had succumbed to his injuries while in the hospital.

The other fatal crash happened the afternoon of May 6 when a Lincoln Town Car driven by 85-year-old Julia Mae Hampton of Crawfordville went through a stop sign on Nowhere Road at Freeman Drive and collided with a Jeep Cherokee driven by Geoffery McCannon of Nicholson, police said. Hampton had to be extricated from her wrecked vehicle and was transported to the hospital, police said, and McCannon was treated at the scene by National EMS personnel for hand and leg injuries.

Police said they were notified on Wednesday that Hempton had passed away.

There have now been seven traffic fatalities this year in Athens-Clarke County.
