UPDATE: Body found in downtown Athens identified

By Joe Johnson

The body of a person found Thursday afternoon in a downtown Athens alley has been identified as that of 35-year-old Michael Christopher Dugan, who was homeless, Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson said Friday afternoon.

Positive identification was made with a fingerprint match at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Crime Lab, where Wilson said it was hoped an autopsy will determine the cause of death.

The coroner said when he viewed the body he saw no signs of foul play.

Dugan's body was discovered at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday in a narrow alley between Woodford and Bar South on East Washington Street.

The body was a way up in the alley, not visible from the street, Wilson said, which is probably the reason it had been there for two to three days before accidentally being found by people posting flyers for an event.

Dugan had no identifying documents with him, according to the coroner, who was attempting to establish from where the man had originally come.
