Athens-Clarke County police said they were investigating a weekend armed robbery that reportedly occurred in broad daylight in the Walmart parking lot off Lexington Road.

The incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday when the victim, a 28-year-old Covington woman, was sitting in her car with her two sons -- an infant and a 1-year-old, according to police.

She was accosted by a male brandishing a handgun who robbed her of a purse containing $400 and bank cards, according to police.

The victim drove to another location where she reported the incident.

She described the gunman as a black male who was about 5-feet-8 and 160 pounds, police said.

Police said the woman did not give an approximate age of the offender, and detectives did not want to release her description of the gunman's clothing "to protect the integrity of the case," police spokesman Geof Gilland said.

Police asked that anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Sean McCauley at (706) 613-3330, ext. 312 or michael.mccauley@accgov.com.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the offender.

Anonymous calls can be made to the Crime Stoppers confidential tip line at (706) 705-4775.
